The Nervous System
The Nervous System is the master control system of your entire body. It tells your heart to beat, your lungs to breathe, your muscles to move, and the list goes on and on. It does everything! The Nervous System consists of the brain, the spinal cord, and all of the nerves in the body. The brain is housed in the skull and the spinal cord and exiting nerves are housed in the spinal column.
The spinal column has two functions. 1. To protect the spinal cord and exiting nerves and 2. to allow movement within the torso of the body. The first job of the spine would be SUPER easy if the spinal column was one solid, immovable bone. BUT instead, we have 24 moveable vertebrae enabling us to bend, twist and move all over. We are so fortunate to have this movement to allow us to express ourselves but it causes the spinal column to do a poor job with its most important job: to protect the spinal cord and exiting nerves!
Subluxations
Subluxations occur when a vertebra moves out of position in relation to the vertebrae above and below it. This causes the intervertebral foramen (fancy word for hole between two vertebrae) to become smaller. This is a problem because the foramen is where the nerves exit the spinal column to innervate our muscles, glands, organs... the entire body! When a subluxation occurs, the misplaced bone places pressure on the exiting nerve at that spinal level and as a result, proper communication with the brain is lost. As stated previously... this is a problem.
Let's discuss a subluxation example that affected Dr. Tillie. When Dr. Tillie was in college, she began to have irregular heart beats. She went to the cardiologist and everything looked normal. She was a healthy college soccer player and the cardiologist dismissed her saying it was nothing. Fast forward a few months and Dr. Tillie began to have headaches. She went to see a chiropractor for pain (like most patients), not realizing she had painless subluxations occurring. The doctor found a subluxation at T2- the innervation to the HEART! After a couple weeks, Dr. Tillie no longer had irregular heart beats. The chiropractor restored the proper communication between her brain and heart and everything returned to normal.
What if Dr. Tillie hadn't gone to the chiropractor? Would this have resulted in a case of an early heart attack? No one knows for certain. But we do know that subluxations are a BIG PROBLEM.

The Chiropractor's Role
Chiropractors are the only practitioners trained to remove subluxations. A Gonstead Chiropractor uses a five part system of analysis to locate where the patient has nerve pressure (AKA where the subluxation is located). After the subluxation is found, the Chiropractor uses their hands to realign the "problem" vertebra. This opens up the intervertebral foramen (remember... fancy word for hole between vertebrae) and removes the pressure off the exiting nerve. At this moment, the communication with the brain is restored! Depending on the chronicity of the problem, this may take many adjustments to obtain these results.
When a patient is subluxation free, their nervous system functions at 100%. This is critical for your health. Your nervous system is able to heal the body better than the best doctor that ever lived. But it needs to have proper communication with the rest of the body!
